April 2, 2013 – CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS

total eclipse concert series

Hey friends,

Back in action after a long weekend spent prepping for spring: I planted a whole bunch of vegetable seeds and tuned up my bike and then BAM — mother nature pulled a fast one and hit us with some ugly sub-zero temperatures. C’est la vie, Montreal. Here in the music department we are busy working on our upcoming Total Eclipse Concert Series, which will go down next weekend with three nights of jams all over the city curated by some of our superstar programmers. Trust us, these parties are not to be missed. Stay tuned for the full lowdown in next week’s charts, and in the meantime get a sneak peek of what’s in store: https://www.facebook.com/events/468353556570646/?notif_t=plan_user_joined

till next week,

((Total Eclipse)) Country Classics Showcase: A Night to Folkin’ Remember

Last night we kicked off our Total Eclipse music series with an intimate showcase of country and folk acts at The Plant. Big thanks to Li’l Andy of CKUT’s Country Classics hour for curating an amazing line-up, including Max Kelly and Jared Rosenbaum, Mike O’Brien and Michelle Tompkins, Sarah Jane Scouten and her Brilliant Stringband, and ol’ Li’l Andy himself. Convenient that the space happened to be located near some train tracks, partly because the train is a staple image of country and folk song, but mostly because the talent of these musicians was off the f-ing rails.

before the event!

Vostok 1

((Total Eclipse)) Q&A with Vostok 1

Vostok 1

Mark your robo calendars! Tell your immediate and not so immediate social relations! Our annual three day music series TOTAL ECLIPSE (Apr. 12th -14th) is comin’ up fast! Time to get to know some of the artists on the bill with these intimate but not too intimate BUT JUST INTIMATE ENOUGH Q&A’s. Next up are the swirling psychedelic vibrations of Vostok 1.

What is your name? Vostok 1

What is the story behind your name? April 12, 1961:

Hometown: Hamilton, Ontario; Chicago, Illinois; Rockland, Maine.

Home base: Montreal

Latest recording/release: Silver Space Probe USB

Describe the vibe/feel of this album in five words:Everything modulating, all the time.

What have you been listening to lately? The Free Design, Karlheinz Stockhausen, The Soundcarriers, The Cure

What’s your pre-show routine? Arranging the light cubes.

…And post-show? Late night droning.

Who would you love to share a bill with? Bear in Heaven

Who are your dream collaborators (living or dead)? Hildegard von Bingen, Brian Eno

If you could see your music, what would it look like? To borrow from Aldous Huxley, “a slow dance of golden lights…sumptuous red surfaces swelling and expanding from bright nodes of energy that vibrate with a continuously changing, patterned life…a complex of gray structures, within which pale bluish spheres keep emerging.”

We’ve attempted to approximate this in some videos:

Most crucial equipment for your music making: Amps. And various time- and frequency-domain modulators.

When and where are your upcoming shows/performances? The Plant’s Birthday, April 27th!

Whose songs should be playing on the oldies station 50 years from now?
In the future Sun Ra will broadcast directly from Saturn. It will be a “cosmix” of Björk, Stereolab, and ambient stellar vibrations.

Vostok 1 will be performing during Total Eclipse as part of the William Shatner’s Whiskey Tears showcase on Friday April 13th at Bella Muse. Super secret address announced 48hrs before the show!

Li'l Andy

((TOTAL ECLIPSE)) Q&A with Li’l Andy

Li'l Andy

Mark your robo calendars! Tell your immediate and not so immediate social relations! Our annual three day music series TOTAL ECLIPSE (Apr. 12th -14th) is comin’ up fast! Time to get to know some of the artists on the bill with these intimate but not too intimate BUT JUST INTIMATE ENOUGH Q&A’s. Third up is Montreal’s not so li’l church cowboy, Li’l Andy.

What is your name?

My name’s Li’l Andy

What is the story behind your name?

My brother’s name is Will. My mom, like many parents, often gets her children’s names mixed up. (That’s okay, we know she loves us.) Anyway, when I was a kid she would often start off by calling me “Will”, then realize her mistake, catch herself in the middle of the word, and change it to “Andy.” So it would sound like “Wi–ittle Andy!” And that became “Li’l Andy”. Then, sometime when I was around age 22, I reached my full height of 6-foot-4 heaping loads of irony upon my already-silly name.
Hometown:

Cantley, Quebec. Slogan on the town sign: “A community where your six-year-old can legally drive an ATV.”

Home base:

Montreal.

Latest recording/release:

All Who Thirst Come to the Waters. 2010.

Describe the vibe/feel of this album in five words:

Pedal-steel in an empty cathedral. (Pedal-steel is a compound word, so I say that only counts as one).

What have you been listening to lately?

Geoff Berner’s song, “The Rich Are Gonna Move to the High Ground”

Anything by the Golden Gate Gospel Quartet, particularly their really terrifying “Jezebel”

What is your craziest/most memorable/favourite tour story?

Stealing a pontoon boat from a summer camp in Rouyn-Noranda was fun. It was less fun when we realised they wisely kept about one-minute’s worth of gas in the tank and we had to row the thing back with our hands.

Most crucial equipment for your music making:

My amp. A Silvertone Twin Twelve that was made by Sears in 1963. I worry about it because Jack White is being a total dork and buying up every last one in North America. And I guess I also need my guitar, which is a nice old Gretsch “Country Club” from 1959. And Randy Bachman is also being a dork and has horded a lot of those in some weird Winnipeg compound for decades.

Whose songs should be playing on the oldies station 50 years from now?

Gillian Welch’s. But they already sound so old. What’ll it be like when they’re old old?

Li’l Andy will be performing during Total Eclipse as part of the Country Classics showcase at The Plant on April 12th. Super secret address announced 48hrs before the show!

A look by Jean Paul Gaultier photographed by Bianca Pilet for i-D Magazine, December 2004

Total Eclipse is approaching fast like a wild steed crazed with rock ‘n’ roll fever!

CKUT’s music department is looking for volunteers to help plaster the city up and down with posters, to stand guard at the doors and accept peoples’ cash money, and to help out with clean up at the end of the night (more fun than you might think!). Anyone interested in enjoying a night (or three!) of amazing music in exchange for a lil’ ol help should contact Kaitlin at totaleclipseckut@gmail.com .

HOT. SAUCE.  See you there, Chickens!
