Album Review: BADBADNOTGOOD – IV

515940

Five years after the release of their debut album, the Canadian jazz band BADBADNOTGOOD has made a name for themselves as one of the most versatile quartets to enter the music scene. BBNG has evolved plenty; they’ve been touring the world and working on music continuously throughout this past decade. It’s fascinating to hear the evolution unfold and witness into which directions the band is willing to venture. They demonstrate a brilliant idea of what jazz music could sound like if hip hop artists were to tackle the genre. After having covered Odd Future, J Dilla, James Blake and Flying Lotus tracks, and worked on an entire collaboration album with Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah, now BADBADNOTGOOD has released their fourth solo effort appropriately named IV. This album is the band’s most confident and endearing project so far; it exhibits a style that has been crafted by inspired young artists. The production is brighter, cleaner and as engrossing as ever thanks to the talented guests featured on the project.   Continue reading

Album Review: After Funk – ‘Til the Sun Comes Up

When I first heard Yanik Allwood’s voice I was pleasantly surprised.  The first song on After Funk’s new album ‘Til The Sun Comes Up begins in semi-typical funk album fashion sporting a phat bass line, and dancing horn melody and as the song progresses I’m expecting more splendid regularity, but then this beautifully subtle soul voice comes out of nowhere and immediately captures my attention.  This moment somewhat summarizes the feeling evoked by the band. After Funk creates funk music in a way that both harkens back to the greats and calls for motion into the future expertly navigating the familiar and new resulting in an intriguing voice in the funk idiom. CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS::: August 11, 2015

Hey friends,

I just got back from a rad weekend hanging with some pals in Toronto, including fellow CFUV expat/Dale Speaking rep Justin Lanoue. It was great! Toronto often gets a bad rap from other Canadian towns but it’s a pretty fun city to visit. It felt great to chill out on some nice patios, eat great food, and explore some new neighbourhoods. I also devoured an ungodly amount of delicious ice cream, which makes the trip an automatic success in my books.

Hope you’re having a great August too!

US Girls Interview

This week on New Shit, we had a chance to catch up with Meg Remy, the artist behind the deceptively-pluralized project US Girls.  The American ex-pat turned Toronto-resident caught a lot of airplay here with her newest release (out now on Last Gang Records), the Free Advice Column EP.  Check the interview below to hear Meg talk about not listening to contemporary music, growing comfortable with your voice, touring on a greyhound, feeding touring artists, and some exciting new projects/collaborations she has store…
