Temps Libre

LIVE RECORDING: Stefan Christoff – Temps Libre

Temps Libre

The headspace for this instrumental duet is a dark night in early February; the point when Montreal winter shuts down most social outings and a budding flower is a distant glimmer.

Following a lulling performance by Dulcimerist Amir Amiri, Casa’s lights dimmed and the crowd hushed for the performance of Temps Libre by Stefan Christoff. Joining the pianist on stage for the album launch was contrabassist Peter Burton, and saxophonist Brahja Waldman.

This album stems from the tradition of non-metric composition, an approach employed by adventurous jazz musicians under the genre ‘free-time’ and ‘free-jazz’. Stefan appropriates the term en-français with modern nods to Montréal’s ambient landscape. The pieces flow in the drone vein of Constellation-style artists while flirting with more experimental-jazz akin to Suoni Per Il Popolo’s aesthetic. Once again, Stefan has made a valuable contribution to the Montréal arts catalogue, offering a resounding message of activism and social reflection.
