CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS::: April 11, 2017

Hi folks,
Over the weekend I managed to score a very nice little record player/cassette deck combo which I promptly set up in my kitchen in place of a much-hated, rarely-used microwave — it was definitely a good (and overdue) improvement. Highly recommended!

CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS::: April 4, 2017

Greetings friends,
Last week I was lucky enough to catch a sold-out Leonard Cohen tribute where a whole crew of Montreal artists played renditions of their fave Cohen tracks. It was a pretty special experience, perhaps even more so given that the whole night was a fundraiser to buy a piano for local youth centre Dans La Rue. Many of our programmers, including Li’l Andy (above) and Katie Moore, participated in the event; what a great reminder of the talent we are lucky to have in the city – not to mention right here at CKUT.

:::WHAT’S UP AT CKUT:::
During the month April Jean Cousin, aka Joni Void, will be hosting The Montréal Sessions on CKUT every Tuesday from 3-5pm, leading up to the release of his forthcoming album Selfless on Constellation Records. For this special residency, Jean is presenting a series entitled Scapes: a “series of conceptual musical selection experiences.” We’ve been promised immersive mixes that aim to transcend genres and traditional radioplay, instead sounding more like a lucid dream broadcast. Intrigued? You should be.

CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS::: March 28, 2017

Hi radio,

Not much to report here this week — we’re nearing the end of the semester and many of our student volunteers are deep in final papers and exam prep, so it’s been pretty quiet around the station. This lull in the usual craziness gives us a nice chance to work on some big-picture ideas. It’s CKUT’s 30th birthday in the fall, and we’re cooking up some exciting plans to celebrate. Stay tuned… :)

Over the weekend I was lucky enough to catch a show featuring live debuts from three great acts, including sundogs (above), L’Ordre de l’Infiniment Nada, and dmr. I always find it inspiring to see acts hit the stage for the first time and totally crush it; it’s a good reminder of the creative and gutsy artists we are fortunate to have in abundance here in Montreal.

:::WHAT’S UP AT CKUT:::
We’re very excited to welcome Iranian-born, Montreal-based sound artists MP | vH+as our curators for our monthly experimental radio residency, If You Got Ears. Here’s what to expect, in their own words:

We are “MP | vH+”, and we invite you to take a trip with us to the farthest territories of computational sound art. We will point at aspects, approaches, questions and meditations on the different areas of “La music informatique”.

Most important, we will listen to music, some of them are composed and performed by ourselves, and the others are masterworks of contemporary music composed by others, only performed by us, using diverse methods, divergent techniques and different systems.

Welcome to our lab.

MP & vH+

Catch this very special program every Wednesday in April from noon – 2pm, or download the archive via ckut.ca.

Hi friends,
Well, we survived last week’s crazy winter storm… most things around Montreal closed down for the day (a rarity in this land of perpetual winter) but it was business as usual here at CKUT, because we are hardcore like that. We did, however, spend a good chunk of the afternoon sliding down the mountain of snow that had accumulated in the station’s backyard…  gotta make the most of those blizzard conditions while they last, right?

Hello friends,

As you probably know, we’re in the midst of an epic winter blast with plenty of snow and frigid temperatures in this part of the world… After a brief glimpse of spring, we’re back in the sub-zero zone here in Montreal. I opted to stay in and hibernate for most of the weekend, but I did venture out for a very excellent album launch from our friends (& CJLO superstars) Aim Low and Echo Beach, pictured above. Well worth braving that -30 windchill.

PS – no SXSW for us this year, we’re having too much fun digging ourselves out of this massive snowstorm to enjoy that Texas sunshine. 😉

Greetings Radio,
Had another busy week, this time highlighted by a couple truly great shows: our own CKUT expat Tim Darcy and opener Molly Burch killed it on Saturday, and politically-charged noise freaks Monty Cantsin (above) and local sound wizard Emilie Mouchous left my ears similarly reeling on Friday. You seen anything good lately?

CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS::: February 28, 2017

Hi friends,
I am still recovering from a crazy weekend of book launchesbenefit gigs, andworkshops, capping it all off last night by opening for the excellent NYC band PILL… I feel like I’ll be pushing the limits of my caffeine intake today. Whew. It’s also reading break at McGill this week, so many of our regular volunteers are out of town visiting warmer climates — please be patient with us if we’re a little behind on music intake this week.

Spike Taylor is a local artist and piano tuner. His projects can be found at theharmonist.ca. For the month of March, 2017, he will host If You Got Ears and feature unusual piano music from around the world, spanning the age of record. He will share stories of the piano technician trade and of the instrument itself. Each week will build toward Piano Day – a new global initiative celebrated on the 88th day of the year to draw attention to the pianos in our midst and the people who love them. CKUT and The Harmonist are co-presenting a Piano Day event at Sala Rossa on March 29 featuring the music of Montreal poet/hero Leonard Cohen in a benefit fundraiser for a new used piano for the street youth outreach centre Dans-La-Rue. Hear this special program on CKUT every Wednesday in March from 12-2pm.

Hey everyone,
It’s a busy time around here as we gear up for the annual Homelessness Marathon at CKUT… In addition to that, I’ve got a couple other projects on the go that are keeping me on my toes this week. Hectic times like these call for extra coffee – I’ve downed three cups so far this morning and am already needing more.

:::WHAT’S UP AT CKUT:::
Tomorrow marks the 15th annual Homelessness Marathon: a yearly overnight coast to coast radio broadcast to raise awareness of homelessness and the issues that contribute to it. This broadcast started a decade and a half ago right here at CKUT and has grown to be a full-on, national initiative produced collaboratively by a wide range of stations across Canada. Rather than a traditional monetary fundraiser, the Marathon aims to raise awareness about housing issues and give a platform for those impacted to share their stories. Stream the whole thing live at ckut.ca from5pm on February 22nd – 7am on February 23rd, and check out the Facebook event for more info on what you’ll hear during the broadcast.

Hi folks,
We got a ton of snow over the weekend and this dirty but cheerful snowman magically emerged in our backyard overnight. Not sure whether he’s the work of some creative overnight programmers or roving undergrads, but either way he made the whole crew smile this morning. We’re forecast for even more snow tonight so we’ll how our new buddy is looking tomorrow

Hello friends,
I’m back in the office after a short trip back to Ottawa for Megaphono — it was real nice getting to catch up with the CHUO & Ottawa Explosion crews and meet some rad new folks. Saw Un Blonde, Lido Pimienta, She-Devils, H de Heutz, Best Fern (above), and more great acts that I am forgetting… I also caught Priests back home in Montreal last night, and it was well worth the frigid trek down to the Casa — would definitely recommend seeing them live if they roll through your town.
