NEW SHIT :: November 3, 2014

creole continuum

First and most importantly, we’d like to send a big thank-you to everyone who supported CKUT during our 2014 Funding Drive. We’re pushing $40,000 and the pledges keep rolling in… If you haven’t donated, it’s not too late! You can pledge online and still be entered into the draw for our killer grand prizes.

Programming-wise, the CKUT music dept wants to help you overcome the Monday slump on NEW SHIT ~ we’re spinning new tunes today 3-5pm. Your hosts Amanda and Nick have some hot selections, many of which are charting this week, including cuts from Kaie Kellough‘s new LP Creole Continuum.

Now that our funding drive has come to a close, we want to thank those that pledged to both NEW SHIT and CKUT! We’ve been able to rock the airwaves for 25 years due to the generosity, support and involvement of so many communities over the years.

Also, do you dream of making playlists, talking with bands and going to shows? Then it’s about time you visited the Music Department. Whether you want to be behind the mic or behind the scenes, emails us to join the team! volunteering@ckut.ca

The World Provider

Friday September 16 Montreal’s The World Provider make harmless, catchy, guilt-free pop. Sure, they’ve got a song called 21 Guns, but it’s sprinkled with cutesy handclaps. See what I’m saying? They’re like the New Pornographers without the pornographers.  It won’t make your mother proud, but it won’t upset her either. Casa del Popolo. 8:30 pm.

If co-ed lollipop isn’t your speed check out Factory Hens at Pirahna Bar for a rockin’ set of original material and a couple of Pretenders and T. Rex covers too. 10:30 pm. FREE!

Toro Y Moi

Saturday September 17 In the mood for some chillwave? Nobody satisfies better than Toro Y Moi, who recently dropped a new EP Freaking Out and will be filling Cabaret Mile End with grooves this Saturday with Unknown Mortal Orchestra. If you’ve already got plans change ‘em cuz this one’s gonna be good.

Oh My Darling

Sunday September 18 If you’re not dropping big bucks to see Wilco at Metropolis, check out Oh My Darling, an all female bluegrass/country/roots band that mix Appalachian Old Time, Southern Twang, and funk inspired bass lines until it’s just right. They’ll be banjo and fiddle shredding with fellow folksters/Sufjan Stevens diehards Lakes of Canada at Le Divan Orange. 8:30 pm. $12

Starfucker

Monday September 19 My pick of the week hands down is Starfucker at Il Motore. The Portland based electro pop gods are gonna tear it up with tropical disco house collective Beat Connection. And if you’re lucky, they might even perform a few tracks from their latest rap mashup side project Skeletron Mixtape #1. 8:30 $12-14

Hannah Marcus

Tuesday September 20 Hanna Marcus’ raw, downtempo story songs are gonna getcha Tuesday night at Casa. For fans of candor and experimental folk. 8:30 pm.
