If you haven’t heard already, Montreal DJ/producer Oonga (aka Eli Levinson) is hosting the June edition of If You Got Ears! A creator of house/techno dubstep and tropical-influenced music, he has been transporting CKUT’s listeners far beyond their musical expectations and around the world.
Since If You Got Ears is CKUT’s exploration of sonic delights, Oonga has been experimenting with the music he is playing during his residency. He taps into unique sounds of the world to “get out of the [world music] narrative” and challenges listeners’ expectations by blending international music with electronic ideas. On his most recent show (June 15th), he played a phenomenal selection of tropical bass and featured fellow artists including global bass producer Munchi and trans-national bass music (Borneo bass!) producer Jet Airess.
Tuning into Oonga’s show is a trip far beyond Montreal’s city limits to destinations such as Haiti (think voodoo drums), Turtle Island (pow wow music), and Indonesia (minimalistic gamelan), as well as a chance to explore electronic from its roots (i.e. Brazilian funk, Angolan kuduro, South African Gqom, etc.)
Join Oonga on his journeys every Wednesday in June (12-14h EST), or listen to past episodes in the CKUT archives! & Also check out his mixcloud (which has mixes uploaded from his shows) and his soundcloud!
I had a great weekend celebrating the fifth birthday of beloved local loftspace La Plante with a big ol party featuring lots of rad performances (including Grace Brooks & the Bad Dog, above), great food, dance party vibes, and a really cute dog. It felt kinda like I died and went to Montreal heaven.
:::WHAT’S UP AT CKUT::: A new month is upon us and that means that we’re proud to introduce a new curator for CKUT’s experimental radio residency If You Got Ears. This time around, we’re excited to welcome sound artist Jeremy Young to host the show every Wednesday from 12-2pm. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s in store, straight from the horse’s mouth: “The purpose of this residency is to reimagine my role as a radio jockey as an active creative participant in the flow of music throughout the set. I will be “performing” my material alongside other artists’ music, integrating my own arsenal of reel-to-reel tape loops live to both intervene with as well as smoothly usher along the narrative of the set. We’re going to explore the dreamstate together, lots of repetition and lots of loops, and each set will wonderfully dictate its own sense of time and time space. What fun!” Not by a computer to stream it live? Don’t fret – we’ve got you covered.

Hope you had a good Easter long weekend! I spent mine bouncing between Ottawa and Montreal, doing some jamming/recording and hanging with pals in both cities. The absolute highlight of the weekend was going into one of my favourite yarn stores in Ottawa and finding three (!!!) cute pups hanging out in the shop, all of whom wanted treats & head-scratches. The one pictured above was named Charlie and apparently he pesters all of the customers for attention non-stop. I melted from cuteness.
:::WHAT’S UP AT CKUT::: We’re thrilled to welcome local musician Kyle Jukka into the pilot seat for the April edition of If You Got Ears. During his residency, he’ll be sharing a collection of music that has a strong transportive affect, impressionistic intention and sense of inventiveness: music from different places and time periods that points towards the building of our relationship with our senses. From the mysteriously hypnotic rhythms of indigenous Tanzania to the sparkling flavors of Latin America to the popular music of the USA and UK, the focus will be on music that paints pictures of worlds and transports you into them. Tune in every Wednesday from 12-2pm, or download the audio from our archives.

This March, Matt and Tim will be hosting CKUT’s artist-in-residence program If You Got ears. Matt and Tim are musical collaborators, working together in Montreal art punk band Ought (signed to noteworthy experimental label Constellation Records). Their adventures apart include Matt’s ambient project Welter & Associates and Tim’s emo/hardcore trio Mands. For now, they expect to host a relatively free-form show, drawing inspiration from experimental music found all over the world, hosting a few guests here and there, and playing plenty of local jams. Tune in each Wednesday from 12-2pm on CKUT 90.3 fm and online at CKUT.ca to open your mind and ears with Matt and Tim.
I saw Drag City jammers Rangda play last night and little pieces of my brain are probably still stuck on the walls of Casa del Popolo — they were that good. Chris Corsano is a hell of a drummer. Everything else in the past week paled in comparison. Has any band made you feel like that recently? If so, I wanna hear about them.
:::WHAT’S UP AT CKUT::: Longtime CKUT contributors and local celebs Matt May and Tim Keen play in a bunch of projects together and apart, including Welter & Assoc., Mands, and Ought. Neither of them really know what they’re going to do yet on-air, but judging by their music collections you can probably expect some local gems, hopefully some special guests, and some avant jams (justly-intoned and otherwise) from around the world. Expect the unexpected every Wednesday in March from 12-2pm, or download the audio straight from the CKUT archives.

Throughout the month of February, Ryan Alexander Diduck will be taking over as guest-host and curator of CKUT’s If You Got Ears. Diduck is a Montréal-based writer, producer and doctor of philosophy. And he has programmed four solid weeks of exciting radio for us, each show centered on a different theme. There will be exclusive in-studio performances, fascinating interviews, and some very special world premieres. Catch Diduck’s residency every Wednesday from noon-2 on CKUT 90.3, and online at CKUT.ca.
For the first episode of his If You Got Ears residency, Diduck dedicates the show to some of Montreal’s most interesting, important and beloved artists. Tune in to hear hot new music from Le Révélateur, and an exclusive in-studio performance by composer Kara-Lis Coverdale. Diduck will also air some classics that define the city’s soundscape, and unearth a few surprises that delve beneath the surface of Montreal’s musical scenes. Don’t miss this special Montreal edition of If You Got Ears, Wednesday February 3rd from 12-2pm on CKUT 90.3 and online at CKUT.ca.
For the month of December, two of Montreal’s most legendary sonic trailblazers take over CKUT’s artist-in-residence program If You Got Ears. Sam Shalabi and Alex Moskos will be teaming up to host the show from 12-2pm every Wednesday, and if their respective oeuvres are any indication we’re in for a real treat. Sam is known for his ability to fuse Middle Eastern traditions with experimental techniques in his solo work as well as collaborations like The Shalabi Effect, while Moskos is the twisted mastermind behind Drainolith and former axe-wielder in the legendary noise behemoth AIDS Wolf. These two pals will be conjuring a whole range of out-sounds to treat & challenge your ears, and we highly recommend tuning in ‘cuz this pairing is truly one of a kind.
Throughout November Small Scale Music has graciously hosted If You Got Ears, and they’ve delivered quite the experience. Small Scale Music is based right here in Montreal and focuses mostly on improvisational and experimental music. It was this kind of sound that Raphael Foisy, the host of this month’s show, brought to the table. Raphael plays bass in the bands Brick Quartet, Bord à Bord, Ninja Simone and in different improvised music settings. He combined elements from all these unique musical experiences in each of his shows, each of which which you can catch on our archives.
Tune in to Sam Shalabi and Alex Moskos in our studios this December for the next instalment of If You Got Ears (which is going to be bananas). Every Wednesday from 12-2, listen in~~
Yesterday’s If You Got Ears was again hosted by the wonderful Raphael Foisy for Small Scale Music, and this time he was joined by French native Émilie Mouchous, a sound artist based in Montreal who creates her own instruments. She has hosted special programs here at CKUT since 2008, collaborating with Andrea-Jane Cornell on multiple occasions. During this show she co-hosted If You Got Ears to bring Montreal some pretty cool sounds and rhythms.
Émilie Mouchous explores sound through radiophonics, homemade electronic instruments, and improvisation. She incorporates vocals, web art, formal sound, and movement into shared sound spaces. Her work is highly praised and has been featured at festivals around the world, such as BENT Festival NY, Kunstradio in Vienna, Radio LX festival de arte radio in Lisbon, and Suoni per il popolo, AKOUSMA, and Mutek here in Montreal.
Tune into If You Got Ears on Wednesdays from 12-2 pm for more!
For the month of November, we’ve got Small Scale Music repping If You Got Ears here at CKUT. Small Scale Music is the exciting record label that packs a big sound. Based right here in Montreal, their releases lie in the realm experimental music such as free jazz, free improvisation, and noise. Their extensive range of sounds combined with their policy of openness to new musicians and styles is what makes them such a valuable part of the MTL music scene, so we’re stoked to have them on board!
Tune in today and every Wednesday from 12-2pm to hear your host Raphael Foisy on the mic, and enjoy the show~~
