CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS::: September 15, 2015

popmontreal14

Hey friends,
Holy smokes, the busy season is upon us here in Montreal… I am still reeling a bit from a great show on the weekend in which one of my projects got to open for the amazing local trio Big|Brave — seriously, you should check out their new LP on Southern Lord cuz it’s a real gem. And see them if they play your town, too!

And speaking of shows, Pop Montreal starts tomorrow (!!!). Maybe you’ll be in our fine city for the festivities? If so, check out some of our CKUT presentations (including the highly-anticipated Ought album release and Pathways to Paris ft. Thurston Moore) or swing by ye olde Brasserie Beaubien where I will be venue managing for the whole fest. I’ll also be repping CKUT on  a panel about collectives & co-ops as part of the Pop Symposium. All that said, please be patient with me if I’m slow on tracking or other email follow-up this week as my hours are kinda zany this week…

Hi friends,
Hope you all had a good long weekend and managed to take a proper day off yesterday — I enjoyed my first holiday Monday in ages (it’s real hard to stay away from this place since we coordinate live programming 24/7) and it felt great. I BBQ-ed and baked a peach cobbler and read in the sun — you know, nice late-summer things. How was your labour day?

Also, we survived frosh week! Whewwwww.

Hey friends,

It’s frosh week and things are crazy! Campus is swarming with bewildered teenagers and clingy parents, and we’re right in the thick of things handing out programming guides, tabling at events, and organizing on-campus concerts. Whewwww. More coffee!

daisies

Hey friends,

The new wave of students is slowly trickling into Montreal and it makes me feel old. Whatever. It’s still summer out there, and I’m gonna make the most of it before the fall really kicks in… Time to cram the next couple weeks with as many BBQs, sunny bike rides, and swimming adventures as possible.

If the answer to these questions is YES, then be sure to join us at local watering hole Nouveau Palais from 10pm-3am as an all-star crew of CKUT DJs take over the decks. Expect everything from tropicalia to punk rock — no holds barred, and open ears highly encouraged. Hey folks,
Yesterday we had jazz superstars Chris Corsano and Mette Rasmussen into the CKUT studios for a live performance on the music department’s show, New Shit. It was insane! They’re not playing too many dates together on this mini tour, but if they hit your town be sure to check ‘em out — these two do not disappoint.

:::WHAT’S UP AT CKUT:::
As part of our ongoing coverage of Suoni Per Il Popolo, we’re thrilled to be broadcasting live from Casa del Popolo tomorrow evening during the Dave Rempis/Josh Abrams/Avreeayl Ra + L’appel du Vide show. Stream it live on our website from 8-10pm EST for all the free jazz your ears can handle, or come and say hi in person if you’re in Montreal! Should be lotsa fun and a good exercise in ear & mind expansion.

CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS::: January 27, 2015

Hey friends,

Hope all of you in the northeast are enjoying your snow day. Here in Montreal, we feel your winter woes — but I’m writing this from a cozy, well-heated office so it certainly could be worse. January is also the Month of Birthdays at CKUT (we aquarius folks are creative types, y’know?), mine included, and last week my heart was warmed by a gang of friends who braved the cold to shower me with chocolate, whiskey, and other treats. The collective hangover was a little easier to bear this year and while I’d like to credit it to us being a wiser and more mature crew, I feel like that is perhaps wishful thinking.

::: WHAT’S UP AT CKUT:::
You guys all know how amazing the Free Music Archive is, right? How about CKUT’s page on the FMA? It’s pretty chock-full of live studio sessions in more genres than we care to list, and we’ve just added a couple recent gems from Echo Beach and Hazy Montagne Mystique to the collection. Give ‘em a listen and don’t forget to check past entries too — we’ve been running this page since 2011, and there’s plenty of good stuff for your ears to discover.

WATCH Notta Comet Live at Midnight Kitchen

The latest instalment of the McGill Music Sessions features Notta Comet performing jazzy, angsty blends of math rock among the pots, pans, and paprika of the Midnight Kitchen.  What accompanies healthy, vegan, PWYC meals better than local indie rock presented by CKUT and TVM?! Nothing, that’s what.

Notta Comet makes sounds that are a little bit math, a little bit jazz, and a lot bit awesome. Check it out!
