Andrea-Jane Cornell Performs Live on CKUT Tonight, 9-11pm

image

Chantale Laplante invites Andrea-Jane Cornell to perform on Chaud pour le Mont Stone, Thursday December 4th 21h to 23h — that’s tonight, y’all. Here’s a little teaser of what to expect when our own music department expat takes over the airwaves with her personal kind of sonic exploration…

Andrea-Jane will be probing the airways in an improvisatory manner using an accordion, radio static, electric ground hum, and hyper amplification. Fluctuating frequencies in the 20 – 30 Hz range will be used as an interfering accompaniment  in the continuation of her research on the interactions of low frequency sound signals transmitted over the FM carrier wave. Technical texts about the FM Carrier wave explain that the
FM
 band
is able
to
reproduce frequencies
between
 30Hz
 and
15kHz with a certain degree of audio fidelity. In experiments carried out on WGXC in Acra and Hudson NY while in residency at free103point9’s , Andrea-Jane Frequencies
in
the
 lower
 end
 saturate
the
signal
 and
 prevent
 other
 sounds
from
being
transmitted clearly.
 For
 example
when
transmitting
frequencies
in
the
 lower
 end
 of
 the
spectrum,
 the
large
shape
of
the
 soundwave
seem
to
saturate
the
 centre
 frequency,
 leaving
little
to
no
room
for
other
 frequencies
or
 signals
to
pierce
 through.

Pop Talk

May 14, 2013 – CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS

Pop Talk

Hey friends,
Had a super busy but great weekend – CKUT celebrated its 25th anniversary on the FM dial with a party for the ages (complete with a community orcHERstra playing a percussion-heavy, punked-out version of a cult fave Italian opera jam), had a great visit with a lovely former CKUT intern from Germany + her bff as they cruised through Montreal, and was wowed by the tales of a few colleagues at a real nice short story reading/performance series on Friday evening. The whole while I’ve been trying to amp up my immune system as I fend off a wicked cold and prepping for a show tonight with CKUT pals AJ Cornell & Eyle of Pine (y’all remember AJ, right?) – both excited and nervous to share a stage with those two.

Gonna be in NYC over the weekend so if you’re around and wanna hang, give me a shout.

MONTREAL SESSIONS: JULY

No, there is not a problem with our studio

Tuesdays 2-5pm in July Emilie Mouchous and Andrea-Jane Cornell are taking ckut’s studio outside for untempered backyard improvisations with objects gathered from here and there radios transmitting to the radio, handmade instruments, vocalizations, ballon symphonies etc.

July 5 – What’s happening out back? AJ and Emilie take some microphones out to the backyard parking lot and stir up a lot of sound and pique the curiosity of many on one of the hottest days of the summer. Using whatever they could find lying around the station for the 45 minute set that used  bicycle bells, kicking metal balls, switches, a drum, glass beads, a salad spinner, dollar store melodica….before coming back inot the cool studios for a vocal improv using ckut’s internet stream as a processor/looper

July  12 – aj and Chantale Laplante started off the show with a live improv, and Emilie joined aj for some vocalizations becme the theme and approach to Remained of the sessions

July 19 – aj all by herself re-mixing the previous sessions and working on some percussive sounds and field recording improvs  for a composition commissioned by Vague Terrrain Magazine

July 26 – Emilie all by herself building intricate and expansive soundscapes with her vocalizations live in studio
