Montreal is pretty rainy but that means there are buds brightening the
trees making for some hazy electric green under the grey skies. Posters are

Napped all day yesterday post weekend tour jaunt. We had a great time,
slept little and all the usual good road trip stuff (our new EP is here, by

Total Eclipse was a total blast! Thanks to all who came out and partied with us for three days straight. It was so cool to host each night in a different underground venue, gotta say, so much talent in this town. As for me, my band Cobra & Vulture is heading out to Ontario for a few days and will be playing in Toronto (Thursday), Windsor(Friday), London (Saturday) and Kitchener/Waterloo on Sunday. Come on out if you wanna! We’re going to be playing a “secret” afternoon Record Store Day show at Grooves Records in London, ON before heading next door to Call the Office. Even more special for me, though, is that our full-length rock record is almost done being mixed. We’ve been home-recording EPs this past year while that monster of a project finishes up. Our latest EP should be available today or tomorrow sometime and is loaded up with organ drones, ladyish vocal harmonies and digital beats…

Woke up to a misty Saturday morning and wandered down to the river with my partner to snap some photos and shoot film. I ate a banana and stared out into the erasure. The sun burned off the fog around noon and Montreal was treated to summer in winter. That there photo is a peep into the music library via a monitor in our on-air studio…you can’t really see this, but there is some spider web laced in front of the camera lens…not sure if I want to dust it off or not. It’s kind of lovely in a Victorian ghost story-ish kinda way.
We’re getting ready for the Homelessness Marathon ’round these parts, we’re gonna be broadcasting live from the streets here in Montreal (from 5pm to 7am) and the will be broadcast by 41 other radio stations. Amazing!Click here for more details.
For my part, I spent my Sunday being a back up singer in a video taping of a bud’s full length record. Mama’s pipes are tired. As a movie geek I’m thrilled about the Oscars- I have a betting pool that’s been doing this for years and who take the event very seriously- not that we think the Academy Awards actually rewards the best films or anything. Woke up as a musician today, first time in the past two busy weeks what with this new job. Coordinator was a housecoat I tied on later, after my breakfast of songs. Recorded three new tunes with my band over the holiday break, mostly choir-like (double-miced) vocals in stairwells and organ, some frayed guitar edges here and there…different from our usual instrumentation. So, I’m thinking a lot about new music, the albums listed below and the half-completed EP that lives on a laptop, and this amazing radio station, re-arranging it all to find harmony.

Amber here, AJ’s successor in the CKUT 90.FM Music Department. I hope all y’all are doing well! Going through stacks and stacks of old vinyl that has been “In storage”
(a.k.a. in the music dept. loft) for over a decade means that you come
across a lot if Interesting stuff – Clevellend is my favourite album cover
so far – we couldn’t get through a whole track because of it’s mediocrity,
but i feel like a better person knowing that it exists.
I really loose it when people steal records from the station, meaning that

A week of vacation and all i have to show for it is this bruise…
It changes colours every day – kind of fascinating
I was in Fahnestock Park, we decided to take our bicycles through
the trails that the park ranger suggested were not recommended riding
for our skinny tires…
There were lots of rocks, hills, tree roots,some poison ivy, giant mushrooms, and my favourite – swelling cicada song.
I propelled myself into my gear shifter, screamed an obscenity,
and continued on my way …

Day two of my week-long vacation, sort of, rewind.
Having spent the first day in a moving vehicle for too many hours,
I consider today the true first day of vacation. I’m going to stay in
to avoid turning the colour of a boiled crustacean, and work on a
composition for Vague Terrain.
And then later head out to The Forma, le Revelateur, and Civilian Devices show at Tandem.

A masked bandit and its cronies came into the office yesterday evening to sample my puffed rice and millet cereal, which I’m led to believe did not please them as it was all over the office floor. They licked my lunch plate clean and had a hoe-down with the garbage, there was probably some frolicking involved, their numbers are unknown, but they live on the roof under the deck……
Don’t worry they didn’t take or break any of our precious new releases, but they did toss the new Hypnotic Brass Band album in the Recycling bin….
I’m on real vacation next week…. off to the bigger concrete jungle of New York

I went up to the top of Mount Royal last night to scope out
the spot were the magic sound mountain is happening
saw some fireworks through the trees, enjoyed the almost full moon and a cold beer.
I went to Western Mass this past weekend for a double book launch at
Mystery Train Records for Two Books on L’oie de Cravan: Byron Coley’s C’est la guerre:
Early Writings 1978-1983, and the words to the songs of Michael Hurley.
There were some interpretations/covers of Michael Hurly songs by some
fine locals and para-local, and Byron read some passages from the book.
On Saturday I attended a July Birthdays BBQ where a grilled coronary
inducing treat called “the bacon explosion” was served up

Leyla Majeri gave me a cd of field recordings she made in Marrakesh and Essaouira
and GRKZGL handed me a couple of cassette tapes of his solo stuff
and his project with percussionist John Brennan
