Total Eclipse Concert Series 2013

April 9, 2013 – CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS

Total Eclipse Concert Series 2013

Hi friends,
A former Radio 1190 pal was in town for a visit over the weekend and we had some good adventures traversing around the city by foot, catching a sweet Drainolith/Andy Boay gig and eating plenty of Montreal’s famous bagels. Having houseguests visit always makes me remember how great the city can be — sometimes I need that kick in the ass to go out and do some local exploring.

Here in the music department, we’re real excited about our upcoming Total Eclipse Concert Series. Running Thursday till Saturday, we have three nights of killer jams lined up each curated by a different CKUT music program. If you’re in Montreal, you’re gonna want to be there. All the deets:

THURSDAY APRIL 11
Free Kick presents Ylang Ylang, Artsychix, and Pyongyang @ Barfly

FRIDAY APRIL 12
New Shit & Passovah present Slight, Nick Kuepfer, Sea Oleena, Year of Glad, and DJ Noah Bick @ the Plant

SATURDAY APRIL 13
Beyond the Horizon & Rock n’ Roll Time Machine present EXPWY, Grupo Skip Jensen, and Porn Persons @ La Brique

Want more info? Check out our website, or take a peek at this amazing video put together by CKUT’s own Lou-ease Burns: [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcnAo6-T5_g]

Shows are $7 each at the door or a three-night pass is $15, available at CKUT. We hope to see you there!

Interview w/ Porn Persons + Expwy on New Shit 4/8

porn persons

We had a wild time interviewing Rodna Howard and her legal scientist from the band Porn Persons. Look out for a transcription wherein we discuss the legal ramifications of a falling ton of bricks vs. the feather of an illegal pelican. Plus, we interviewed the 50s prog, bubblegum pop, AM-radio-Tommy-aspiring, (often) one man band, Expressway. Both bands will be playing our Total Eclipse Festival Series. Check our playlist below, plus a fan-made video for Expwy, and take a listen to the show over at the archives!

AKUA

TONIGHT on Venus Radio, A K U A

AKUA

Tune in today to CKUT from 12-2pm for Venus to hear an interview with Ghanan/Canadian synth-soul songstress A K U A !

Born to an immigrant father from Ghana and a Canadian mother, Akua Carson was raised in a relatively uneventful suburb of London, Ontario. As a biracial child in a culturally homogenous community, Akua’s childhood would bear a certain uneasiness surrounding identity and categorization; a theme that has persisted its way into her music and undoubtedly influenced the diversity and ambiguity one hears in her sound today.

She’ll be playing a show presented by the Howl Arts Collective tonight at La Sala Rossa alongside Detroit MC Invincible. Definitely don’t miss it if you’re into good vibes, soul or hip hop.

CKUT in Good Company

wefunk

It may come as no surprise to you all that we at CKUT really love radio. Spoken, weird, musical or otherwise, we’re big fans of stuff that comes from a stereo and a dial. That spirit might have changed a bit with the whole internet thing, but it’s also given us the opportunity to hear shows from programmers around the world.

Lexis over at Music is My Sanctuary is definitely a proponent of this kind of intercontinental radio listening, and he’s put CKUT’s WeFunk andThe Goods in the company of shows like Gilles Peterson Worldwide and Beats in Space. Needless to say, we’re in good company.

Check the post here

and check out those shows if ya didn’t know!

CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS: March 19, 2013

mardi spaghetti

Hey friends,

Charts are hitting you late because my day was mostly spent teching a super rad remote broadcast of the excellent Mardi Spaghetti series’ fifth anniversary show — so many amazing local musicians participating in a 12-hour free improv marathon, whewwww. If you dig wild jazz and avant-garde sounds, you owe it to yrself to check things out.

Quick note for those in Kingston and Toronto, I’ll be in your cities over the weekend playing a couple gigs — get in touch if you’ll be around!

This long day plus hauling gear through an intense snowstorm has done me in for now..
A bientot till next week,
joni

Mardi Spaghetti Marathon CKUT Remote

Mardi Spaghetti

Hey! Everybody’s a fan of improvised music, yeah?

Say, for example, Ellwood Epps (who we interviewed on this very blog) or Malcom Goldstein (who sometimes plays live on CKUT). Now add on about fifteen more extremely talented performers and you’ve got a marathon of improvised music hosted and curated by the Tuesday Montreal institution, Mardi Spaghetti.

Since we’re such fans of these sorts of sounds, we’re gonna be there from 12-2pm today doing a remote broadcast from this very special event.

Check the lineup after the jump and on Mardi Spaghetti’s site and tune into CKUT from 12-2pm to help celebrate this wonderful improvisational happening’s 5th year of existence!
