Empty Set

Emptyset + Jon Hopkins @ MUTEK 5/31

Empty Set

Empty Set @ MUTEK Nocturne 3

There’s space in the front at Metropolis. Pale lime press necklaces are everywhere. It must be half full but it feels loud with talk. Empty Set take the stage behind huge monolithic chunks of metal spewing wires. Take a bright white triangle and dip it in tar–this is Empty Set’s music. A lot of it is made by pitting the acoustic resonance of natural spaces against bursts of static and sub oscillators. Live, the crowd becomes resonator. Syncopated low end turns your nose into a kick drum, the cartilage into the drum head. Shrapnels of white noise ricochet off illuminated bodies. The whole thing is visceral to the umpteenth degree. “Welcome to MUTEK” it spells out in the charged air.

Jon Hopkins @ MUTEK Nocturne 3

By comparison, Jon Hopkins’ set was cozy. Warm bass squiggles and distended piano figures over rolling, interlocking rhythms made for a whole lot of head bobbing. Jon himself doesn’t appear to stop moving on stage, bouncing across his set-up, firing off percussive taps on his Kaoss Pads. When I spoke with him last month, he talked about trying to make “infectious grooves” on his new album, Immunity. Seeing him carry an audience through an hour or so of unbroken rise and fall certainly felt like a proof of concept. Amplified microscopy filled the wall behind him, and it felt good hearing small sounds on a big system.

Take a listen to a tune from Jon Hopkins here and stay tuned for more coverage of MUTEK!

May 21, 2013 – CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS

pandagraffiti_zpsa6252068

Whew, playing catch-up after an amazing weekend down in NYC. Had great hangs with lots of pals (shoutout to Caroline Shadood for showing me all the best brunch spots and thrift stores hidden in Bushwick), saw Liars, ate a serious amount of pizza, etc. All those good New York things.

Now it’s back to the grind tackling this big collection of paperwork and emails – hit me up on Thursday if you want to talk records.
Loud charts return next week.

We also played everything under the sun, from soul trap to noise jazz to synth jams, all of which can be found on the playlist below. Tune in next week from 3-5pm on Monday for more new music!

Pop Talk

May 14, 2013 – CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS

Pop Talk

Hey friends,
Had a super busy but great weekend – CKUT celebrated its 25th anniversary on the FM dial with a party for the ages (complete with a community orcHERstra playing a percussion-heavy, punked-out version of a cult fave Italian opera jam), had a great visit with a lovely former CKUT intern from Germany + her bff as they cruised through Montreal, and was wowed by the tales of a few colleagues at a real nice short story reading/performance series on Friday evening. The whole while I’ve been trying to amp up my immune system as I fend off a wicked cold and prepping for a show tonight with CKUT pals AJ Cornell & Eyle of Pine (y’all remember AJ, right?) – both excited and nervous to share a stage with those two.

Gonna be in NYC over the weekend so if you’re around and wanna hang, give me a shout.

Femme Maggots

May 7th, 2013: CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS:

Femme Maggots

Hey friends,

Still shaking off the last bit of sleepiness after an early morning remote broadcast from a cafe/laundromat featuring a live performance from local CKUT pals the Femme Maggots (above) — no time for sleep, too much going on around Montreal these days. Over the weekend I caught two nights of good noise at the Cool Fest, celebrated the birthday of beloved local performance space the Plant at a big fete its residents put together, hung out in the sun, jammed a whole bunch, plotted new collaborative projects∑ precursors of a good summer to come.

For those of you in Montreal, we hope to see you at our 25th anniversary celebration going down this Saturday at Sala: live performances, DJ sets from the CKUT crew, cake, and more rad stuff that can only be experienced in person. Full details here: http://ckut.ca/c/en/node/349

till next week

We also touched briefly on the CKUT 25th Anniversary party happening this Saturday over at La Sala Rossa (more info here), definitely not to be missed if you feel like cake and good tunes.

Total Eclipse 4/30

April 30th, 2013: TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS

Total Eclipse 4/30

Montreal is gorgeous these days and now that everyone is finally shaking off the last traces of winter hibernation, the city is abuzz with shows and other happenings∑ In the past week, I caught Baltimore stoner/psych wizards Needle Gun, local pals the Femmaggots and Ought, Colleen Green, acoustic singer-songwriter Swampwolf, and more that I’m forgetting — this mini-heatwave plus an ongoing bout of insomnia has got my brain fuzzier than usual.

get outside if it’s sunny where you are.
