CKUT TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE CHARTS::: November 19, 2013

Salut radio,

It was Expozine weekend here in Montreal, and I am left feeling extra-crafty in its wake — I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and dive back into the world of silkscreening and printmaking, guided by some handy how-to zines I picked up.

Here at CKUT, we are also busy preparing for the audiovisual extravaganza that is Magic Sound Box, ready to plunge listeners & participants deep into the realm of sonic installation art in a loft deep in the heart of the city. If you’re in Montreal, swing by and experience the magic firsthand with your eyes and ears; if you’re far away, catch the noises broadcasted live on CKUT on Thursday, Nov. 21st at 8pm.
Want to know more about Magic Sound Box? Check out the CKUT website for full details: http://ckut.ca/c/en/node/568

All you’ve gotta do to for your chance to win a pair is email library@ckut.ca with the subject line “ARCADE FIRE GIVEAWAY” and tell us why you love the almighty 90.3 FM. All entries will be put into a draw, and we’ll choose a winner early next week. Deadline to get your name in is Friday, November 22nd at noon. Good luck y’all!

In collaboration with CKUT, Howl Arts launched their album Howl! Live at La Sala Rossa on Wednesday. Audio from the event is now available to stream.

The event included performances from Sarah Pagé + Robin Best, 1/4 tonne bottleneck (Nick Kuepfer and Eric Craven), Brahja Waldman + Stefan Christoff, and Jason “Blackbird” Selman. Well worth a listen!

Enjoy.

Salut radio,

Had a super rad weekend hanging w/ Susie from KSSU, Lisa from CMJ, Canada from Pirate, and Kodi from the Syn as they ventured up to Montreal for a whirlwind visit. Also wound up subbing in on drums for a free jazz quartet at a real nice afternoon gig on Sunday, which was at once nerve-wracking and way fun. Tell me about your weekend?

Here are a couple of internet treats for animal-lovers that have been making us CKUT-ers really happy today:

Bent By Elephants + Smokes + Howl! arts live album // Underground Sounds

BBE

Tune in to Underground Sounds 8-10 tonight for a dose of fresh Montreal music.

Starting the show is a live interview and performance with Bent By Elephants — this will be special and should be filed under ‘not to be missed’. Later in the show Patrick Cruvellier from Mile-End rock trio Smokes premiere songs from their Unlucky EP.

On Wednesday November 13 Howl! arts is launching their first live album at la Sala Rossa featuring some of my recordings dating back to 2009. I caught up with Howl! member, musician and community activist Stefan Christoff about the making of the album, the artwork by Kevin Lo and who will be performing at the album release concert. We’ll close the show with that interview and some recordings from Norsola, Sarah Page and Les Momies de Palerme.

Gig review: My Bloody Valentine @ Metropolis, November 6/13

photo-33

On a dreary November night, a crew of CKUT-ers ventured out to see sonic legends My Bloody Valentine lay sonic waste to one of Montreal’s largest concert halls. CKUT’s Marc Montanchez recaps the experience for those who missed out, or for those who want to relive the gig all over again:

MBV played most of loveless, about 2/3rds of the new album, and a smattering of selections from their first album. All note for note, perfect and great sounding. If you’re not a  connoisseur, MBV’s music is pop perfection in the continuum of simple hooks supporting melodies that are wistful and/or melancholic in emotion. The sound is comparable to holding a sea shell to your ear, filtered through a fractal equation of infinitely nuanced beauty amplified by a 30 foot wall of 100 watt Marshall stacks.

Their final number, You made Me Realize (an early pre-Loveless EP release) featured the infamous mid-section blast of sonic doom, which lasted about 10 minutes. The only way to describe this is to imagine being strapped to a rocket booster as it ignites from the launch pad and exits earth’s atmosphere.
