Vieux Farka Toure, noted Malian singer and guitarist has recently released his 6 album, entitled Mon Pays. This album acts as a love letter to Toure’s homeland, reminding the world of the beauty and culture Mali possesses. Relying predominantly on Toure’s expert acoustic guitar skills, there is a calm and serene quality of the album, which exemplifies the comforting feelings a homeland exhibits. The emotional changes found throughout the album reflect the tragedy and beauty of Mali. The ending track Ay Baboy expresses the suffering of the nations while offering a wish and hope for a brighter more deserving future.
Tracks like Safare, Yer Gando and Doni Doni show a seamless integration of traditional African guitar and slick blues licks. While the vocals remain heavily steeped in traditional Mailian music, the album manages to remain current. Overall this record is a cohesive piece, showcasing Toure’s national pride and highlighting his expert guitar skills.

Montreal blown-out rockpiece Special Noise are not funny. Good tunes though.
Rendering up live sound picks, weekly
Loose-Fit fundraiser, Thursday August 8th at Brasserie Beaubien
Thursday, August 8th – LOSE IT! Loose-Fit Fundraiser w/ Steve Jr, Porn Persons, EXPWY, JLK, Sheer Agony @ Brasserie Beaubien
Definite, certain, resounding pick of the week. Loose-fit has been championing accessible rock shows out of the Brasserie for a year and a half now. Pay-What-You-Can shows and volunteerism makes this a rare gem indeed. Volunteerism and the crew’s own PA system make the room free to book and cheap for showgoers.
So, come out and support DIY show culture, help repair their soundsystem, and ensure these shows keep happening. $10 (still PWYC!) with, unsurprisingly, 5 awesome local acts to boot. Sludgy two-piece Steve Jr, basement noise-pop outfit Porn Persons, navel-gripping golden age-throwbackers EXPWY, psych-out Don’t-Miss JLK, and the soft-touch powerpop overdrive of Sheer Agony.
Another Passovah Fest Q&A from one of our local favourites, Maica Mia
In the weeks gearing up to Passovah Summer Fest 2013, we’ll be posting Q&A’s from festival performers. The local promotion/production outfit has some really A+ programming this year. Check out the full line-up on their site here.
Conflux with us, Underground Sounds and guest-host Noah Bick (Passovah) for two hours of Montreal music, tonight 8 to 10pm. The second edition of Passovah Summer Music Festival has more than 50 local bands scheduled over three days with proceeds (by way of PWYC donations) going to the Immigrant Workers Center. Additional voices of MORI, Asmtha Camp, Holyaok and more are planning to join the conversation. Be with us.
