Total Eclipse of the Charts

The heatwave is on in Montreal and it’s really doing a number on my brainpower at the moment. I could talk about the weekend – picnics in the park, seeing Tyvek, an amazing garden party solstice potluck, etc etc – but I’m gonna surrender to the mental fog and skip straight to the charts. Locals Jen Reimer & Max Stein take the top spot again this week with their recordings of impromptu guerrilla performances around Montreal – it’s good stuff.

Stay cool out there.

Solar Year

Solar Year + Heirloom // Underground Sounds

Solar YearMontreal music is storming the airwaves 8-10 tonight with minimal electronic duo Solar Year on the line to tell us about the Waverly LP re-release on Ceremony records. Later, Lisa of Heirloom is braving the rain to talk about the folk bands album launch on June 29.

Especially solid tunes are cued up from the likes of How to Dress WellHilotrons, and Madonna (covered by Paperbag Records artists, obvi).

Wow, Montreal, you have outdone yourself: saw Peter Brotzmann, the Ratchet Orchestra, the French-American Peace Ensemble, Nu Sensae, Babysitter + JLK, Mikal Cronin, EXPWY and more in the past week alone∑ still reeling a bit and catching my breath over here in the music dept.

Enough blathering, back to work – here are some charts.

Till next week,

PS – CKUT is hiring! Montrealers, check it out:

WATCH: Andy Boay live in the CKUT Studio

WATCH: Andy Boay live in the CKUT Studio

Andy Boay (Andy White from TONSTARTSSBANDHT) joined us in the studio on June 3rd to play “Big Chestined Nights” and “Don’t Desert Me” from his album Evil Masters. Andy conjured a devilish acapella choir from his mysterious boxes, all while roaming the hallway with a wireless mic.

You can download studio versions of the tracks here, and grab the MP3 of the live session from CKUT’s archive here.

Johnny Paradise on the Montreal Sessions, 3pm June 18th

Here in the music department the great Suoni Per Il Popolo ferstival continues to burn holes in our ears and hearts, and today on the Montreal Sessions we’ve got a star-studded Suoni special to celebrate the festival’s second week. Johnny Paradise (of CKUT favourites Maica Mia) will be taking us through a grab bag of Suoni hits, as well as interviews with Big Brave and Ian Ilavsky, co-founder of Constellation Records.

They’ll also be giving away tickets to the Del Bel/Big Brave show (June 22 @ Casa, a CKUT + Suoni co-presentation), so tune in at 3pm on 90.3FM (or online!), and give Johhny a call on 514-448-4013.

Party Like It's 1699

Elfin Saddle + Party Like It’s 1699 // Underground Sounds

Party Like It's 1699

Get your local music fix at 90.3 FM tonight 8-10pm on Underground Sounds. An interview with mythological folksters Elfin Saddle is first up. They’ll be at La Sala Rossa tomorrow for a Suoni per il Popolo show alongside Hanged Up and a CKUT fave Nick Kuepfer. In the second half of the show members of the digital opera project Party Like It’s 1699 are in the studio to answer questions about what a digital opera even is and what to expect from their June 22 performance at St-James Theatre. Musically, we’re looking to Fringe Festival and Montrealers who made the Polaris Long List (way to go Suuns, Luyas, and too many more to name!).

In short, our city rocks.

Quebec City

Quebec City

Hi friends,

You’re getting these charts a day early since I won’t be in the office tomorrow – I’ve been taking some time off to hang with my parents, who made a stop in Montreal in the middle of an enviously long roadtrip they embarked on a while back. We spent the weekend camping near Quebec City, exploring the old town and the rural farmland of the St. Lawrence. Pretty dreamy.

Back on the local front, Suoni Per Il Popolo is in full swing so there’s even more great music than usual seeping into the ears of Montrealers; I was lucky enough to catch Lee Ranaldo & Steve Shelley a few days ago and Peter Brotzmann plays here ce soir. Later this week, we will be broadcasting live from the Ratchet Orchestra show (Wednesday 20-22h EST) and the French-American Peace Ensemble (Thursday 21-23h) so tune in if you want to experience some of the audio magic live via the CKUT airwaves.

Loud chart returns next week.
