From the Vault: Gateway – S/T (1976)

Perusing CKUT’s enormous library for hidden gems is one of our favourite pastimes here in the music department. Though I stumbled upon this record by chance it already seems to fill a gap I never knew existed. Recorded in 1975, Gateway’s first, self-titled record speaks volumes. Upon first listen the swirling sounds within immediately remind me of Pat Metheny’s early works with Bob Moses and Jaco Pastorius. Not surprising considering the artists involved and their various musical histories. John Abercrombie on guitar, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and last but not least Dave Holland on bass. Gateway (the album) is filled with surreal interweaving and dazzling textures; the trio seems to speak as one.  Find yourself a copy if you dig!!

Here’s a link to the first track:

Dans La Rue’s “Inspire,” compilation of Quebec artists & youth

There are 10-15,000 homeless people in Montreal. While CKUT already does a bunch to raise consciousness of our city’s homelessness (including a partnership with local organization Dans La Rue), we’re always looking for other ways to ignite the dialogue about our homeless population (in addition to our love of weird music). What’s that? Did you say there’s a musical compilation of Quebec artists and street kids working together in support of Montreal’s street youth? That sounds like the ultimate match for CKUT!

Dans La Rue, a local community-based organization dedicated to supporting street kids and at-risk youth aged 12-25, will be launching their first album Inspire this summer. They invite the media to join them on Thursday, May 30 to the album launch for “Inspire” at 5pm at Studios de Rouen.

CKUT started their partnership with Dans La Rue through Radio CKUT @ Chez Pops which includes the Annual Homelessness Marathon each February (recap from this year’s event here and here). We love all the work that they do and want to spread the word as much as possible!

Better yet, CKUT just got “Inspire” from one of our friends at Dans La Rue! You will be able to hear tracks from the album very soon!

Temps Libre

LIVE RECORDING: Stefan Christoff – Temps Libre

Temps Libre

The headspace for this instrumental duet is a dark night in early February; the point when Montreal winter shuts down most social outings and a budding flower is a distant glimmer.

Following a lulling performance by Dulcimerist Amir Amiri, Casa’s lights dimmed and the crowd hushed for the performance of Temps Libre by Stefan Christoff. Joining the pianist on stage for the album launch was contrabassist Peter Burton, and saxophonist Brahja Waldman.

This album stems from the tradition of non-metric composition, an approach employed by adventurous jazz musicians under the genre ‘free-time’ and ‘free-jazz’. Stefan appropriates the term en-français with modern nods to Montréal’s ambient landscape. The pieces flow in the drone vein of Constellation-style artists while flirting with more experimental-jazz akin to Suoni Per Il Popolo’s aesthetic. Once again, Stefan has made a valuable contribution to the Montréal arts catalogue, offering a resounding message of activism and social reflection.

HowlArts co-presented the event with CKUT.

Hey friends,

Hope all you Americans enjoyed your long weekend – up here in Canada, I hit the road on Friday night to play a show in Trois-Rivieres alongside fellow CKUT pals Ought and oh man did they ever kill it! We all got spoiled with Trifluvien hospitality, crashing in the apartment above the bar and hanging out on the back terrace around the campfire post-show. It was super dreamy, despite our early departure the next morning to boot it back to Mtl in time to help with a live remote broadcast from the Montreal Anarchist Bookfair. And hey, that was amazing too!

RPM charts return next week.
Keep those airwaves radical, wherever you are.

WATCH Cinéma L’amour get Loopy!

Local loop-rock duo Cinéma L’amour teamed up with CKUT and TVM recently for a video shoot in their weirdo loft.

Guitar tones aplenty, positively preposterous percussive displays, and a serious merger of Proggy structures and Poppy sounds await!

If you dig the tunage, the band is dropping their debut full length record (which currently sits perched at #2 on this week’s charts!) this Friday, May 31st. All the deets are right over here!

If You Got Ears!!!

Today is Ryan Diduck’s last day as host of IYGE, big ups! The show offers a heavy dose of sonic experimentation and airs every Wednesday 12:00-2:00 PM. U.K. techno up-and-comer Lee Gamble is playing Mutek tomorrow night at SAT, but first he’ll be dropping by CKUT to do a guest mix! Patti Schmidt, the festival’s curator and former CBC luminary, will also be interviewed!!

Check out this article featuring Lee Gamble:

Last but not least check out Mutek’s page for festival info, tickets, etc.

Tune into today’s Montreal Sessions for interviews and more!

We are only a few days away from being 5/12 through the year 2013! (I wish that fraction reduced to something cooler, but it doesn’t.) With May coming to an end, unfortunately we have this month’s last installment of the band Dead Messenger as the hosts of The Montreal Sessions. Tune in today from 15-17h00 to hear their last two hours of music, madness and interviews!

Rumour has it that Dead Messenger is going to have two mega-special guests on the air with them this afternoon. First, they’re going to have an interview with David Groover from local band the In and Outs and their new album Zero Gravity. The band’s bandcamp tags are “rock,” “best,” “montréal,” “music,” “roll,” and “sexy.” How could you miss this?!

The In and Outs are in, obviously.

But wait, there’s more! Dead Messenger will then bring local choreographer Helen Simard into the the studio to talk about dance (presumably) as well as some collaborative projects coming up later in the year. I hear there are talks of a super special collab for this year’s Piss In the Pool Showcase…

As always, Dead Messenger will bring you two full hours of awesome music from cool new bands, local and beyond. Make sure to turn on your radios at today at 3pm to hear them rock the airwaves on The Montreal Sessions one last time!

Your host for May’s Montreal Sessions, Dead Messenger

Each month, a different band, promoter, or individual with superb musical appreciation shares their favorite music, cultural phenomena, and more on The Montreal Sesisons. Check out the show’s audio archives and our previous blog entries about the sessions. If you’re interested in becoming involved with the Montreal Sessions, contact us!
