SHOW REVIEW: Acid Mothers Temple @ Sala Rossa

The ides of April: the day was sunny and the night was nice and the presence of a band as surreal as the weather of Montreal itself brought enlightenment at the stage at La Sala Rossa. Coming from the mystical depths of Japan and playing music unlike any other, Acid Mothers Temple’s performance could genuinely be described as a masterpiece of psych.

TJUTJUNA kicked the night off to an electric start with a sound that was just as morphed as their name. Their set was incredibly tight, with perfect co-ordination between the band’s two drummers and the guitarists.  The use of other digital sounds was very well placed and if you didn’t get their music, your ears are missing out.

Everyone was completely taken from the moment Acid Mothers Temple arrived on stage. It wasn’t long before the quartet of veteran Japanese musicians transformed into true sonic magicians, streaming long white hair and all. The music erupted suddenly and deeply, and it could’ve summoned mythical creatures in the distance with its unearthly force. The images and thoughts running through one’s mind upon hearing them sing were all choreographed by the will of the band. Their music was equal parts original, theatrical, and artistic. Never has psychedelic rock been so hypnotic.

Acid Mothers Temple is a completely unique band and the crowd that night was a true witness of it. Everyone was shaken — in the best way possible — and thrown into a new state of awakening. It was a great show, even though I did not understand a single word the band spoke the whole evening.

Nick Kuepfer

Hey friends,

It was a jammer weekend here in Montreal as the CKUT music department let loose with our annual Total Eclipse concert series: three nights in a row we invaded some of our favourite lofts and dive bars to bring weird & wild sounds to the ears of the city. It made for some pretty memorable times, including Nick Kuepfer’s spellbinding set at the Plant (pictured above) among countless other highlights. Thanks to everyone who helped out, played, and partied with us. CKUT loves you forever.

Total Eclipse Concert Series 2013

Total Eclipse Concert Series 2013

Hi friends,
A former Radio 1190 pal was in town for a visit over the weekend and we had some good adventures traversing around the city by foot, catching a sweet Drainolith/Andy Boay gig and eating plenty of Montreal’s famous bagels. Having houseguests visit always makes me remember how great the city can be — sometimes I need that kick in the ass to go out and do some local exploring.

Here in the music department, we’re real excited about our upcoming Total Eclipse Concert Series. Running Thursday till Saturday, we have three nights of killer jams lined up each curated by a different CKUT music program. If you’re in Montreal, you’re gonna want to be there. All the deets:

Free Kick presents Ylang Ylang, Artsychix, and Pyongyang @ Barfly

New Shit & Passovah present Slight, Nick Kuepfer, Sea Oleena, Year of Glad, and DJ Noah Bick @ the Plant

Beyond the Horizon & Rock n’ Roll Time Machine present EXPWY, Grupo Skip Jensen, and Porn Persons @ La Brique

Want more info? Check out our website, or take a peek at this amazing video put together by CKUT’s own Lou-ease Burns: [youtube]

Shows are $7 each at the door or a three-night pass is $15, available at CKUT. We hope to see you there!
