POP is in the air, and in the week preceding the festivities, here are a few shows to whet your appetites.
Thursday (right now)
Head over to Il Motore to catch the deeply moving post-rock of Explosions in the Sky’s Japanese label-mates, MONO. Opening for them is the former drummer of slowcore pioneers, Codeine, (and an accomplished solo guitarist and composer in his own right ) Chris Brokaw.
Friday
I’m pretty sure there’s a bad joke to be told about a Swedish pop group, a trio of Urban-Dictionary-terminology-using garage rockers, and four men in dresses walking into a bar, but I’ll spare you. Go check out Le Kid, UBT (formerly Uncle Bad Touch) and Man Legs tomorrow night at Popolo.
Le Kid, Uncle Bad Touch, Man Legs@ Casa del Popolo
Saturday
Why not continue your weekend at Popolo with the field recording + guitar music of Nick Kuepfer, the ambient folk of Big Brave, and Jason Sharp’s baritone saxophone playing? Or, perhaps some industrial post-rock by Mardi Noir plus the francophone art-song stylings of Mansfield.TYA at Divan Orange?
Mardi Noir, Mansfield.TYA@ Divan Orange
Nick Kuepfer + Big Brave + Jason Sharp @ Casa del Popolo
Sunday
Continue the Casa streak with their monthly spoken word night, Words and Music.
Monday
Noisy and gorgeous tones collide as AUN, sic, Jen Morris & Erick d’Orion, and Mazen Kerbaj close out your Popolo binge.
AUN, sic, Jen Morris & Erick d’Orion, Mazen Kerbaj@ Casa del Popolo
Tuesday
This will be really good. Hopefully it will be something like this. Or possibly like this. You might even learn how to Schnitzel Boogie.
Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Phedre, Bodyguard@ Cabaret du Mile End
Wednesday
It begins. I’ll be scoping Dam Funk and Mr. Muthafuckin eXquire, but you can also check out Deerhoof, or Gang Gang Dance doing their respective thangs.
Deerhoof, Buke&Gase, Mirel Wagner@ Cabaret Du Mile End (POP)
Gang Gang Dance@ Eglise Pop Litte Burgundy(POP)
DAM-FUNK + Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire + Les Anticipateurs + Yacht Club
