Check out Cult MTL, y’all.

Check out the website that has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of the Anglo paper weekly, the Montreal Mirror: Cult MTL!

From the website:

We all worked at the Montreal Mirror, either in editorial or as freelancers or both. Our aim is to serve Montreal as we used to, but with a fresh format and voice. We will deliver daily coverage of the city, from news to culture to event listings and recommendations for things to do, see and hear. Because there’s never a shortage of stuff to do, just a shortage of savvy voices to steer you to the best of it.

Check out our coverage on the fold of the MTL Mirror right over here!

Sexy times on 21st Century Schizophone

You think it’s hot outside right now?  Wait until the 21st Century Schizophone hits the airwaves for its third outing. This week we present an extended meditation on questions of identity as mediated by sound technologies.  In the first hour we set the flux capacitor on the captain’s chair to 1985 from whence the 12 year-old version of your host Randolph Jordan will guide us through a Gerstyn Hayward mix-tape including radio, turntable and tape experiments by Konstantin Raudive, William S. Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Genesis P-Orridge, John Oswald, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Crispin Glover, Philip Jeck, and The Son of Schmandolph vs. The Human Ick, capped off by a live vinyl butchering session as the present-day R.J. hacks through a stack of spoken word records on the CKUT decks.  And in the second hour we’ll be joined live in studio by special guest Nicole, phone-sex artist extraordinaire who will demonstrate her vocal talents while we muse about the soundscapes of auditory arousal and the slippery nature of identity when the voice is allowed to roam free of the body – complete with an experimental spiritualist phone sex séance to bring the show to a head!

About leaving this excellent job.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to share some news with you: My partner and I have decided that it would be best for the both us if I moved with him to Regina, SK for the 10 months that he’ll be working there this year. This hasn’t been an easy decision, but I know it’s the right one given our experience with living apart from each other and the length of the separation ahead. It’s been a difficult choice because it means that I will have to leave this awesome job, my band and my hometown for a while (band will still tour though, which is a soothing thought for me!).

What this means for CKUT is that I will be here to hire and train a new person up until October 1st. Short job posting is here, long one will be posted on the station’s website soon as it’s still be edited. Deadline is 10am August 15th- please distribute widely!

An atonement, an e-funeral.

It’s not fair, you know. How two plants, in such close proximity to one another, should be treated so differently. RIP spider plant, AKA John Doe (named post-mortem).

Update: the known cause of death was ‘neglect’. Body was discovered on the other side of the music office, only an arm stretch away from its living counterpart.

Carnival Weekend at CKUT

Machel Montano,  International Power Soca Monarch brought his ENERGY to Montreal this Carifiesta weekend.  Before bringing down the roof at CEGEP Andre Laurendeau, he got into things with Howard Stretch Carr and Faith Sankar on West Indian Rhythms. If you were jumping up on the road and missed the interview, you can listen to it here.

Veteran ‘yard music’ performer Eric Donaldson honoured the 50th anniversary of Jamaican Independence by performing at Parc Jean Drapeau for Jamaica Day. He stopped by the CKUT studio TWICE! Hear him interviewed on  July 5th’s episode of Positive Vibes and again on the July 6th edition of Butcher T’s Noon Time Cuts.

This week on 21st Century Schizophone (MTL Sessions)…

This week the 21st Century Schizophone charts intersections between the arts of film sound design and soundscape composition to explore the similar working methods, aesthetic concerns and political goals of these areas of creative practice.  The show features an in-depth listen to the work of sound designer Leslie Shatz and composers Hildegard Westerkamp and Frances White in and around the films of Gus Van Sant.  We continue the show’s schizophonic mandate by considering what happens when soundscape composition is imported into the audiovisual realm of the cinema, and how film sound can become a sound art in its own right through the magic of radio.
