We need so many helping hands!

Have you some free time handy for us? We need mega help with our music collection right now, and I’m gonna be real here: it involves lots of detail-oriented work involving stickering up (“processing”) CDs/cassettes/LPs for our new releases section, filing older CDs in our archives and some data entry.

This kind of volunteer work is ideal for folks interested in:

  • getting to know CKUT
  • music geeks, heads, snobs, lovers, etc
  • natural born librarian-type folks as well as compulsively-neat hand-writers
  • arts and crafts aficionados

Spread the word! And then get in touch: music AT ckut DOT ca

CONCERT LISTINGS or how hard it is to be away from Montreal in the month of June

by aj

Montreal is in the throws of festivalitis, burning with fever that’s showing no sign of breaking until late September.

Here’s a glimpse of the epidemiology:

As Cheese-laced as it might come across, there is indeed
something for everyone and for those, like myself whose
pockets contain nothing more but lint, there are a lot of
free shows and events that you can take in. I’m more drawn
to take in shows that lean towards the experimental- sound
art-improvisation- drone side of things, so these listings
are not objective, for which I make no apologies.

Thursday June 14
Nothing like a day of ambulating around the city in the
sunshine stopping here and there to take in a healthy dose
of sound in public spaces. The fine folk at Oral Records
/ Minute productions have brought together a wide array of
sound makers for a few days of public art interventions in
the form of Ghosts of Public Spaces/Les Fantômes des
Espaces Publics. For a full list of events check this out.

takes possession of The Casa and Sala Rossa
with Drainolith, who just put out a killer piece of wax
on Spectro Spools/Editions Mego titled Fighing!,
Bobo Boutin, whom I’ve actually never seen perform solo but can guarantee
it will be imaginative if his visual art blog is an indicator
of this bête sauvage’s abitilty to bend a form to his own
devices, Toron-toe-nians Tenderness, if i understand
correctly, yet stand to be corrected because music reviews
are written like  a cryptic crossword, and I’m too thick or
square to see through the innuendo, anyways seem like
Tenderness is Chrissy Reichert and  mrZnocKURMAN expect a
collage of sounds and killer pitched  vocalizations that
follow their own beat and cat meows, and Edmon-toe-nians
Energetic Action, bring their syncopated sludge to round
out the fest on the Casa del Popolo side.
On the other side of Saint Laurent Street, at the Sala
Rossa Wyrd Fest  is hosting Toronto heavyweights Coca Cola =
the meeting of U.S. Girls and Slim Twig, Local fringe pop
quartet Brave Radar, Halifax duo Dog Day, and Toronto’s
Actual Water.

Friday June 15
I’m missing my man Yassiin Bey (a.k.a. Dante Terell Smith, aka Mos Def) who graced mtl with his presence a few months
back with the reunion of Blackstar. Local super group Nomadic Massive and the Narcycist,( who, if you have not caught
delivering live licks – this may be your last chance in a
while – he’s moving away, and i will indeed sorely miss him.)
will be warming thing up for the man, expect the unexpected

Local sound provocateur Steve Bates and Nagoya Based Lethe (kiyoharu Kuwayama) will invest the sonic space of the darling foundry with two site specific works. Bates re-imagines the structures of fences as an antennae for low-watt FM transmitters. The resonance of a particular space is at the core of Lethe’s works, he will be using dry ice packs  and gently heated metal surfaces to transform the Darling Foundry’s large cavernous concrete space into a resonant mass.

Saturday June 16
An excessively unique experience awaits you at 7pm, grab your swim trunks and head over to McGill’s Memorial Pool for an underwater album launch, the brain child of Solar Year, who have rigged the pool up with underwater quadraphonic sound system for a submerged experience to launch their Waverly album. 5$ with swim suit, 10$ without.
After your refreshing swim, head up to the Plant to catch Suuns, Man Forever ft: the Besnard Lakes, and USA out of Vietnam are taking The Plant (185 Van Horne)

Sunday June 17
A conflict of interest here, friends, I have no choice but to attend Maine based sound artist who works with tape  and subtleties Jason Lescalleet‘s show at l’envers since i’ll be one of the opening acts along with Yves Charuest & Geraldine Eguiluz

Monday June 18
Many Montrealers have been impatiently awaiting the return of Grouper, Portland Oregon-based guitarist and shaper of subtle sounds that require attentive listening. Liz Harris has been making music under the grouper moniker for several years, and has several releases to her name, the most recent of which, a two part album: Dream Loss and Alien Observer that Harris had self released in 2011 – stark dreamy deep and melodic guitar and voice that pierce through a fog of reverberant accumulations  has just been reissued by Kranky records, she will be joined by Toronto Based Picastro and Nadja who crafted a split record called Fool, Redeemer late in 2011 on Alien8 recordings that pretty much blew my mind.
